I would like to put in a new programmable thermostat but I don’t have enough wires. This is a common problem when replacing a mechanical thermostat or a thermostat powered by batteries. These older thermostats require 4 wires, but newer more sophisticated thermostats require a 5th wire known as the Common wire to power the digital display. There are two ways to add the common wire to a four wire installation: Before starting, we recommend that you take a picture of the original wiring to the old thermostat as reference to help remember what terminal each thermostat wire was connected to. The easiest and least expensive option is to sacrifice independent control of your indoor fan. At your heating and cooling equipment repeat the same step and move the G terminal wire to the C terminal.

A Thermostat Is Just A Switch by Carol Fey You could replace a thermostat with a light switch, and the heating equipment would never know the difference. One day long ago, when I was newer in this industry than I am now, I was sitting in the well-appointed office of a large homebuilder. I was there because the heating contractor had told me that the reason he was putting in the cheapest in both meanings of the word thermostat was because the builder told him to.
The builder had just told me that he went with whatever the heating guy recommended. As I began my pitch, “Well in that case, we can do what’s best for the homeowner

How to Test Whether a Thermostat Is Sending a Signal Replace your old thermostat to remove unsightly, discolored plastic housing or metal-domed thermostats with sleeker, more economical digital-display thermostats. Thermostats manufactured before with a sliding tab or turn knob often come with a glass vial of mercury that is used to run the furnace. These thermostats can be safely recycled at HVAC wholesale distributors, of which there are over collection locations in California, to ensure that mercury is reused.
Remove the screws that are holding the thermostat to the wall and gently pull the thermostat away from the wall to expose the wires. There is a wire for the heater and there may be a wire for the air conditioner as well. The terminal screws for each device that the thermostat is connected to should be marked with letters such as W, Y, G, RC and R. Before you remove the wires, wrap a piece of masking tape around each wire to form a tag with the tape. Mark the masking tape with the letter designation of each wire’s terminal screw with a felt-tipped pen.
If the wires want to pull back into the wall, tape them down with masking tape to hold them in place.
If you are having problems with a digital thermostat, there are a few simple tests that can be performed to isolate the problem and help you decide whether to replace the thermostat to fix it. Step 1 – Check Temperatures Before getting too involved in testing, check the room temperature on a digital thermometer. If the temperature matches what is being shown on the thermostat, you can verify that the room temp sensor for the thermostat is working.
Any discrepancy here indicates a bad thermostat sensor. While the sensor can probably be replaced, it is more cost and time effective to simply replace the entire unit. The next step will be to check the set point calibration.

STEP 1 Turn off the power to the furnace by turning off the breaker in the circuit breaker panel. STEP 2 Remove the existing wall thermostat by gently pulling it off until it unsnaps from the wall plate. You may need to remove a few screws before it will pull off the wall plate. STEP 3 Disconnect all the thermostat wires from the thermostat and label them according to which terminal they connected to. Remove the wall plate from the wall. Mount the wireless thermostat receiver wall plate to the wall with drywall anchors and screws.
STEP 5 Connect the thermostat wires to the terminals on the wireless thermostat receiver. Connect them up to the appropriate terminals. STEP 6 Mount the receiver to the wall plate by pushing it on until it snaps into place, or tighten screws as required. STEP 7 Turn the power back on to the furnace. STEP 8 Put new batteries in. Technically it is possible to use a smart thermostat such as the Nest with electric baseboard or wall heaters, but we no longer recommend it. We no longer recommend that you attempt to install a smart thermostat to use with our products. We even began the process of bringing new parts and products into our system so we could sell the solution directly. Even though we have performed successful testing with the Lyric and Nest thermostats in our engineering lab, we have concerns about the ongoing reliability and durability of this work around.
We felt there were a growing number of you who were interested in having a smart thermostat or wifi control option with our heaters. In the past we felt this was a good solution. The Honeywell Lyric, Nest and other smart thermostats are designed to work with central home heating systems. Those are controlled by low voltage thermostats , which use 24 volts.
Electric baseboard and fan heaters work with line-voltage thermostats, which can be either or volts. If you hooked up a low-voltage thermostat directly to one of our heaters it would fry the thermostat.

Replacing an old thermostat Sometimes I have little revelations that pop into my head and recently one of these had to do with thermostats. Yeah, home ownership can really have an effect on you. Seriously though, I thought about the shoddy control over our natural gas furnace we have with our current, circa s Honeywell round thermostat.
It works well enough, I guess, except that it’s analog and I’m just not into that sort of thing. I’m a digital boy. So, I did a little digging online and found that it’s really no big deal nor does it cost much to replace it with a modern digital thermostat.

I appreciate that kind of confidence. But the Lux GEO has a few tricks up its sleeve, and actually has some functionality that both the ecobee and Nest lack. If you do have a C-wire available, the Lux GEO will steal power from your furnace like any other smart thermostat, or you can even power it with a mini-USB adapter, if you happen to have a use-case that requires it. But the fact that the Lux GEO can power itself completely on batteries, and is smart enough to allow you to select from one of three power profiles High Performance, Balanced, or Optimized while on battery may be the smartest feature of this smart thermostat.
When the power flickers at my house, my ecobee3 always needs to reboot. Not only can the Lux GEO run on batteries, it comes with a set of nice ones included. One of the huge benefits of going that route for this review was that I could sit down to configure and program the Lux GEO before having anything wired at the wall. The dial interface is simple and intuitive, and your first setup task forces you to use it right away. Clicking through the setup wizard without any help from the instructions was a breeze: Thankfully, the process worked great with the Lux GEO: After naming the thermostat, the app walks you through the rest of the process.
Again, keep in mind I did all this before even starting to wire the thermostat to my furnace. I connected the R, Y, G, and W wires.

CryHavoc17 Elite Member They are very simple to use. You plug the matt into the thermostat, and the stat into the wall. The stat has a probe on it that monitors the temperature and tells the unit when to turn the power on or off based on the temperature you set it at. This can be done several ways. One is to stick the probe directly on the matt before you put the matt on your tank.
You can also put a piece of tile over the heated area, with the probe underneath the tile. Currently my only belly heated set up has the probe underneath the newspaper, which also has a layer of cypress much on top of that. As that snake never goes under the newspaper thats all I need. If she did, id do it a different way. Because the probe wont be measuring the temp the snake is exposed to, you will need a separate thermometer to measure the temp in the basking area.
A digital unit with a probe works best, they are only about 12 dollars. You place the probe in the basking area where the heat matt is and the digital part of the unit on the cool side of the tank, and you have all your measurements in one spot basking area, cool side, and humidity Then you have to adjust your thermostat setting until you get the idea temperature. For example, my thermostat needs to be set to 96 degs in order to get the area my snake is in to a 90 deg basking spot.

Troubleshooting Guide Baseboard heater strips come from the manufacturer with built-in thermostats. They do the job that they were designed to do, but they have drawbacks. First, quite often using them means getting down on the floor and crawling under or behind tables to adjust them. Second, if you have two or more baseboard heaters in the same room, you have to adjust each of them individually. It is much more convenient and efficient to connect the baseboard heaters in parallel and hook them up to one wall-mounted, across-the-line thermostat.
Measure and mark a spot 5 feet up from the floor. Use an electronic stud finder to make sure that you will not be drilling or cutting into a wall stud. Draw an outline around it. Drill into the wall space where the thermostat cutout is located. Reroute the power cable from the baseboard heater to the wall cutout where the thermostat will be located.
