Origin hypotheses[ edit ] A traditional hunter-gatherer society in Wyoming, Scholars have developed a number of hypotheses to explain the historical origins of agriculture. Studies of the transition from hunter-gatherer to agricultural societies indicate an antecedent period of intensification and increasing sedentism ; examples are the Natufian culture in southwest Asia, and the Early Chinese Neolithic in China.
Current models indicate that wild stands that had been harvested previously started to be planted, but were not immediately domesticated. An abundance of readily storable wild grains and pulses enabled hunter-gatherers in some areas to form the first settled villages at this time. Most of this work is known through personal communication and few details are available in advance of publication. At least three sets of researchers are engaged in DNA studies, and three sets of researchers are undertaking projects to develop more extensive, region-wide osteological studies.
These efforts include work on the early Braden and DeMoss remains with Yohe and Pavesic , and work on Congdon remains with Chatters and Hackenberger Bonnichsen and Weitzel continue to refine their approaches to archaeologically recovering animal and human hair for DNA analysis. In the report, author Barney Warf describes how cannabis use originated thousands of years ago in Asia, and has since found its way to many regions of the world, eventually spreading to the Americas and the United States. For example, the Vikings and medieval Germans used cannabis for relieving pain during childbirth and for toothaches, he said. Marijuana has been legal in many regions of the world for most of its history.
Where did pot come from? It is important to distinguish between the two familiar subspecies of the cannabis plant, Warf said.

As America moved headlong from the Victorian to the modern age, a new image for women developed, symbolizing the changing times. According to leading magazines and periodicals of the time, the modern woman was vigorous. She exercised and was encouraged to eat right. This was an unprecedented break from the rigorously controlled physicality prescribed for the ideal 19th century woman, with its emphasis on delicacy and fragility. The first pageant winner reflected these changes in attitude towards beauty.

Known as the Olmec civilization, its early site is at San Lorenzo. For the next years La Venta is the cultural centre of a large region, trading with much of central America. The Olmec traditions of sculpture and of temple architecture , developed over eight centuries, will influence all the subsequent civilizations of the region. The most characteristic sculptures of San Lorenzo and La Venta are astonishing creations. They are massive stone heads, more than two metres in height, of square-jawed and fat-lipped warriors, usually wearing helmets with ear flaps.
The chunky and uncompromising quality of these images will remain typical of much of the religious art of Mesoamerica, particularly in the region around Mexico City.

Mar 01, Skip Burzumato Confused by the dating scene? It might help to see where it came from. Whenever possible, I love to use the word courtship in everyday conversation with young and old alike. It’s one of those words with which most people are familiar, but have vastly differing opinions of what it means. For many, courtship is an old-fashioned word.
It summons visions of men wooing women with small tokens of affection and asking their hand in marriage on bended knee.

And for good reason — for centuries, strategically planned marriages allowed the wealthy and elite to retain their social standing, property and family businesses for generations. Marrying for love was pure fantasy and relegated to works of popular fiction. Courtship in the Victorian Age: Calling Cards, Visits and Chaperones Respectable behavior and strict courtship rituals were the hallmarks of Victorian romance. Absolutely no physical contact was allowed until the couple became engaged, and gifts were limited to impersonal gestures like flowers, chocolate or a book.
Emotional intimacy was expressed primarily through love letters. Dance halls and theaters encouraged group socializing between men and women, and dating became a way to build popularity and social standing. Certain behavioral norms — for example, men should pay for dates, dating many different people before marriage — became popular. Courtship in Twentieth-Century America.

One path of wine history could follow the developments and science of grape growing and wine production; another might separately trace the spread of wine commerce through civilization, but there would be many crossovers and detours between them. However the time line is followed, clearly wine and history have greatly influenced one another. Fossil vines, million-years-old, are the earliest scientific evidence of grapes. The earliest written account of viniculture is in the Old Testament of the Bible which tells us that Noah planted a vineyard and made wine.
As cultivated fermentable crops, honey and grain are older than grapes, although neither mead nor beer has had anywhere near the social impact of wine over recorded time.

Stephanie Coontz A protester in New York City after the recent passage of Proposition 8 in California, limiting the marriage rights of same-sex couples in that state. Same sex couples across the country and around the world are asking for the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples. The controversy that still swirls over California’s Proposition 8 has kept the issue of same-sex marriage squarely in the national spotlight.
For those who oppose gay marriage, allowing same-sex couples the same legal rights as heterosexual couples amounts to nothing less than a revolution in the institution of marriage and the family. This month, historian Stephanie Coontz puts the desire for same-sex marriage into some intriguing historical perspective. She demonstrates that heterosexual couples instigated the real revolution in marriage–the idea that two individuals should be able to choose their partners based on love, sexual attraction, and mutual interests.
Gays and lesbians have simply followed suit. For an examination of the history of same-sex rulings in Canada, please the Origins article here. The demand that society legally recognize same-sex marriages is often called revolutionary. And so it is, but not in the way most people assume. But the kind of same-sex relationships envisioned by most gays and lesbians who seek to wed is indeed unprecedented.
The demand that individuals should be able to choose their partner solely on the basis of love, sexual attraction, and mutual interests is indeed a huge challenge to traditional marriage.
